Transcribing a physical document on a computer can be harder than it sounds. It may be difficult to find a suitable position for the paper, the used editor may aggravate you with all its automatic features and so on. If you can scan the physical documents, you can use GenScriber to transcribe them into an editable form much easier, because it was created specifically for this purpose.

The application is free to try, without any significant restrictions. You can have it up and running in just a few seconds, on any modern Windows version. It provides full support for both 32 and 64-bit operating systems and it doesn't have any special requirements.

The user interface is divided in two parts. Scanned documents can be imported and previewed on the upper half of the window and the transcribing can be done directly underneath the image, on the lower half of the window. You can import entire image folders and preview each item separately. To make the documents easier to understand, especially if they are handwritten, the software lets you set the image to Greyscale, negative or apply your own custom filters.

GenScriber is intended for two types of documents. You can transcribe ordinary text documents or tables and spreadsheets. The application provides separate tools for each of these document types and you can find them on separate tabs. The best part is that they won't hinder you with any kind of automatic features that guess what you are about to type in. You can just type from start to finish, without worrying that a word or value will be modified without your knowledge, due to an auto-correct function or something similar.

Although the editing tools are kept simple, they still have a few features that will make your work easier. For example, when working on a spreadsheet, you can define your own column heads, fill cells with increments of a previous value and more. While spreadsheets can be saved only in CSV format, there are more output options to find for text documents. You can save them as plain TXT or RTF files, as PDFs or in HTML format.

Pros

GenScriber makes it easy to transcribe scanned documents. Also, the software provides options for making the scanned document easier to read. Its editing tools are simple and they won't interfere with any automatic features.

Cons

A built-in OCR function would be a welcomed addition. Regardless of what kind of document you wish to transcribe into digital format, GenScriber will make your work much easier.
